Use TVs for promotion, panel urges BEST

The committee members of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport have urged the undertaking to use TV sets installed in its buses for promotional purpose.

The committee members of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) have urged the undertaking to use TV sets installed in its buses for promotional purpose. According to them, the move will help increase the goodwill of BEST.

The TV sets installed in many BEST buses have proved to be a good source of revenue for the transport undertaking. Advertising agencies that have been awarded contracts are supposed to help promote social causes and in turn, they can telecast pre-recorded advertisements too.

For last few days, the BEST has been receiving complaints about the advertisements telecast in the buses. “At times, the advertisements are noisy and make it difficult for commuters to travel in the buses. Plus, some of the advertisements are bad in taste,” said BEST committee member Vilas Chavri. “Even drivers can’t switch TVs off or reduce volume.”

The corporators have also asked the BEST to use TV as a medium to propagate info about the undertaking. “We have monopoly on road transport in Mumbai, but in coming days we would have many competitors (referring to Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport’s Volvo bus service,Metro service and Monorail). Before that happens, the commuters should know about our glorious history,” said Sunil Ganacharya,a BEST committee member. “We have never spent money to advertise BEST. But as you are getting it (advertising) for free, why can’t you do that? Marathi language should be used in the advertisements,” he said.

When contacted,BEST General Manager Uttam Khobragade said the administration would look into the suggestions.
