Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on Friday asked officials to prepare a comprehensive list of slumdwellers eligible for rehabilitation on the basis of the 1995 electoral rolls. At present, all slumdwellers who settled before January 1,1995,are eligible for free rehousing. Chavan also instructed officials to rope in an information technology firm for data collection and compilation of a comprehensive database of eligible slumdwellers.
Officials said the Chief Minister suggested that a separate mechanism be set up to complete the task in order to enable the housing department to get an accurate idea of the number of families to be given free houses.
Sachin Ahir,MoS for Housing, said the Chief Minister also sought to know what measures could be put in place to initiate rehousing of slumdwellers settled on central government-owned land and also data of how much land reserved for various amenities is at present encroached upon. We discussed availability of land for rehousing, the hurdles in undertaking slum rehabilitation schemes at present and the progress of rehabilitation schemes after the decision was taken to extend protection to all structures built before January 1,1995,even if current occupants settled after that date, Ahir said.
The minister also said Chavan asked officials to prepare a clear roadmap for the redevelopment of the remaining four sectors of Dharavi in the next two – three months. A presentation on the progress in the Dharavi Redevelopment Project was made by Satish Gavai,vice-president,Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority, which is undertaking one of the five sectors redevelopment.
The CM directed that a project management consultant or firm be appointed expeditiously for Sector 5 of Dharavi so that work on this sector can be started immediately. Gavais presentation said a total of 356 beneficiaries would get flats in the first redeveloped building in Sector 5.
