UK team visits MMRDA

After a visit by the Mayor of London,an 18-member delegation from the United Kingdom visited the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) on Wednesday to learn about the nuances of some of the large proposed infrastructure projects in Mumbai.

The team, representing the UK’s Urban Regeneration and Infrastructure Trade Mission, focused on projects such as the proposed Metro rail corridors, the Sewri-Nhava Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) and the Virar-Alibaug Multi-Modal Corridor.

“MMRDA projects are being noticed by foreign players. It is a welcome sign as mega infrastructure projects do require huge funding,” Additional Metropolitan Commissioner Ashwini Bhide said.

The delegation members were interested in understanding the bidding process and the importance given to the project’s aesthetics, architecture, heritage and environmental aspects, apart from the core details of the projects, the MMRDA said.

The UK Trade Mission’s visit follows that of the Mayor of London, who headed a 12-member delegation that met MMRDA officials last month and showed keen interest in financing infrastructure projects in the city.

“We are impressed with the way MMRDA kickstarted the MTHL. The international business community would be happy to know that technical efficiency decides the successful bidder and not the least price,” said Sonal Ahuja, director, international development,Capita Symonds,London.

The MMRDA recently decided to invite tenders from interested bidders for the two-kilometre MTHL,after it failed in finding a suitable bidder in the past. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) was handling the project earlier, but it was later handed over to the MMRDA.
