The Yellowgate police have sought the help of UK-based Kelvin Hughes, the company which reportedly manufactured the navigational equipment fitted on board MV Nordlake,to send their representatives to Mumbai and assist investigators. The merchant vessel had collided with Indian Navys INS Vindhyagiri on Sunday evening, leading to the latters sinking a day later. A team from Kelvin Hughes is expected to come to Mumbai this weekend.
Police said the assistance was sought because the case requires accurate technical understanding. The representatives of the company will help us retrieve the navigational data of Nordlake and then investigate further to ascertain the actual cause of the collision, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Port Zone) Quaiser Khalid. The experts from the company will understand thier equipment better, even better than the captain of the Nordlake, added Khalid.
On Thursday, the police also recorded the statement of the captain of INS Vindhyagiri. A day earlier,Nordlakes captain Petros Valneo had denied any misjudgment on his part leading to the collision. Valneo had blamed INS Vidhyagiris navigational staff for the collision as well as the controllers at the Vessel Traffic Monitoring System. We will record the statements of the entire navigational staff of the naval ship, said Khalid.
The police is now likely to compare the statements of Valneo and Vindhyagiris navigational staff with the data and physical evidence. INS Vindhyagiri,a frontline frigate of the Indian Navy, had collided with container vessel MV Nordlake at 4.36 pm on Sunday near Sunk Rock Light House,in the navigational of the Mumbai harbour. The First Information Report (FIR) was lodged at Yellow Gate police station against MV Nordlake by Lt Commander Sunil Chaturvedi of the Indian Navy.
