Teachers threaten to intensify stir, reiterate decision to boycott duty.

Even as Mumbai University (MU) has decided to conduct TY BCom exam from March 28,protesting degree college teachers have sent SMS to the principals of their respective colleges saying they would not support the college management. The teachers have also threatened to intensify their stir and are firm on their decision to boycott exam duty.

The SMS sent by members of Bombay University and College Teachers’ Union (BUCTU) members reads,“Attempts are on to hold TY exam keeping the agitating teachers out. Henceforth our teachers will not extend any support and co-operation to college management and principals, especially in conducting exams. This will cause serious break-up in healthy academic relations between teaching staff and college management…General secretary,BUCTU.”

Senior senate member of MU and BUCTU general secretary Madhu Paranjape said,“We have been fighting for over a decade now. The state government is taking us for granted. Hence,we decided to boycott exam duty. Why is the university administration interfering in this? The exam should have been postponed.”

A circular issued by MU to principals of all its affiliated colleges says the colleges must request their teachers to participate in the exam process. In case the colleges fall short of manpower, they can take the help of non-teaching staff, junior college teachers, school teachers, members of the management, retired teachers, bank employees, government servants and NGOs for invigilation work.

Many teachers have objected to the idea of assigning invigilation work to ‘outsiders’. “Conducting an exam is a sensitive task. If the job is assigned to anyone, malpractices could take place,” said a teacher.
