Two young men,one of them a minor, were arrested Friday evening while allegedly trying to dispose of a female foetus resulting from an unwanted pregnancy in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park.
The Kasturba Marg police, which arrested them, will hand them over to Meghwadi police under whose jurisdiction the abortion occurred.
According to police, some security guards at the SGNP spotted the duo enter the premises with a plastic bag in their hands and followed them as their movements were suspicious and furtive. The duo were allegedly soon seen trying to dispose of a foetus in the inner forest area of the SGNP. They were overpowered and caught by the guards, after which the Kasturba Marg police were informed.
One of the two men was identified as Ajit Vishwakarma (20),while the other,a 17-year-old,is his friend. Both of them stay in Jogeshwari (east),the police said.
We questioned the duo and have found out that a 17-year-old girl in their locality became pregnant, after which her mother made her undergo an abortion. After the abortion, the girls mother told the duo to dispose of the foetus. We have registered a complaint, which will be transferred to the Meghwadi police for further inquiries, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Dahisar division) Sunil Deshmukh said.
The police said the doctor who conducted the abortion had also been made an accused in the case.
The abortion was done in the Highway Medical Centre. We found that the doctor in-charge forged the hospital records, showing that it was the girls mother who was admitted there and delivered the child. He has also been named as accused in the case, along with the mother of the girl, Deshmukh said.
