The Kolhapur police have arrested two persons who were travelling in an Indica car with electric detonators and a large amount of ammonium nitrate explosives.
Sandeep Ganpatrao Patil (30) and Dilip Kumbhar (40) have been sent to police custody till December 20. The two have been identified as ammonium nitrate suppliers and a probe is on.
According to senior police officers,the duo was arrested with illegal explosives 50 electric detonators and 90 kg of ammonium nitrate when their Indica car was intercepted at Nandini Naka towards the Shirol Bypass Road,100 metres from a hotel in Kolhapur on Friday.
While the explosives in the car belonged to Patil,another 600 kg ammonium nitrate was seized from Kumbhar on Saturday. Police said the two have been uncooperative and have not revealed where the explosives were being transported to.
The police have not ruled out a terror angle. The duo has been mum about the source of the explosives and where the consignment was being taken to. At this stage,we cannot say it was going to be used as fertilisers as they have not given any information on the detonators and how they sourced them, said a senior IPS officer from Kolhapur.
The detonators,ammonium nitrate and the car have been seized by the police and their total value is estimated to be over Rs 4 lakh.
Ganpatrao is a native of Sangli,while Kumbhar,though originally from Satara,resides in Sangli.
