Two from Bihar arrested with counterfeit notes

According to the police,both the accused,at the instance of one of their associates in Sivan,boarded the Pawan Express in Chhapra and came to the city to hand over the counterfeit notes to someone for Rs 70,000. They were arrested while they were on the lookout for the receiver near the railway station,the police said.

“Working on reliable information,a team from Crime Branch Unit 7 laid a trap near Ghatkopar (East) railway station on Tuesday and nabbed the two accused. They were found carrying counterfeit currency notes. A total of 4000 fake notes of Rs 50 denomination with a total face value of Rs 2 lakh were recovered from the duo,” said a Crime Branch officer. As many as 40 bundles of 100 counterfeit notes each were seized from the accused,the police said.

“Prima facie it appears that these notes were printed by the associates of the accused on sophisticated digital machines in Sivan. These counterfeits match up extremely well to genuine notes. The paper used is of a high quality,and the embossing feel and the water mark tend to deceive even an expert. It is a rare phenomenon that a Rs 50 note has been counterfeited. The fake notes generally seized are of Rs 1000,Rs 500 or Rs 100 denominations,” the Crime Branch officer said.
