Two cops accused in rioting case held

Two constables wanted by the Vinobha Bhave Nagar Police allegedly for rioting were arrested on Friday.

Two constables wanted by the Vinobha Bhave Nagar Police allegedly for rioting were arrested on Friday. The constables,Sanjay Bayas and Rajesh Shelke,were arrested after a court rejected their anticipatory bail application.

Both were wanted in a rioting case after Madhukumar Singh,a shopowner,registered a complaint against them and five other persons.

The complainant had alleged that his brother,he and others were assaulted on October 25 by a gang of about 25 persons. Singh had suffered a fracture to his hand while his brother was stabbed on his leg.

Senior Police Inspector Arunkumar Aaigale of Vinobha Bhave Nagar Police Station said that both the persons arrested have been charged with rioting,unlawful assembly,attempt to murder and voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon.

“They were named in the FIR by the complainant. We have arrested both Bayas and Shelke after the court rejected their anticipatory bail application,” said Aaigale.

While Shelke is posted at the Vinobha Bhave Nagar Police Station,Bayas is attached with the Local Arms Unit in Naigaon. On the day the incident happened,Bayas who was reportedly on duty at the time,came to the Vinobha Bhave Nagar Police’s jurisdiction and then allegedly joined the others in assaulting the victim.

“The two will be produced in court on Saturday,” Aaigale said.

Earlier,the police had also arrested Dharam Salunkhe,a head constable of the Local Arms division in Naigaon,in connection with the case. Four other persons were arrested with Salunkhe.
