Traction change to be inspected soon: CRS

The traction conversion will help Central Railway improve energy efficiency and cut transmission losses.

After much delay, traction conversion from 1,500 Volt Direct Current (DC) to 25,000 Kilo Volt Alternate Current (AC),from Kalyan to Thane and fifth and sixth line between Kalyan and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT),is expected to be done by month-end,said a senior railway official.

The traction conversion will help Central Railway improve energy efficiency and cut transmission losses. It will reduce the travel time of long distance passenger trains coming to LTT as there will be no locomotive change at Igatpuri station.

A revised schedule for conducting the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) inspection has been planned. A railway source said,“The first round of inspection is planned on June 22 and 23 and the section will be charged with the new power on June 29 and 30.”

Earlier, the inspection was planned for mid-June,however,procedural delays prevented the inspection from taking place.

Once CRS gives a go ahead to railway officials, the entire section between Thane and Kalyan and the fifth and sixth line between Kalyan and LTT will be charged with the new current.

Chetan Bakshi,CRS central zone, said,“CRS has been asked to prepare a schedule. The inspection will be done once the schedule is ready and approved.”
