TMC’s 18-hr work on bus deck

The Thane Municipal Corporation has decided to carry out a marathon work—from Tuesday night to Wednesday afternoon— on a bus deck under the Station Area Traffic Improvement Scheme.

The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has decided to carry out a marathon work—from Tuesday night to Wednesday afternoon— on a bus deck under the Station Area Traffic Improvement Scheme (SATIS). Workers will be at work on the bus deck outside Thane railway station for hours pouring concrete to build slabs over the girders covering an area of 9000 sq ft.

According to Executive Engineer Pravin Phapalkar,it may take 18 hours to construct the concrete slabs.

Enormity of the activity can be judged with the fact that about 310 cubic metre of concrete should be poured to make a monolithic structure. Ready-mix concrete trucks will bring in molten concrete from two plants at Kasar Vadavli and Tikujini Wadi in Thane. At the construction site,65 ready-mix concrete trucks will ensure a regular supply of concrete to two pumps which in turn will take the molten concrete to the desired location. A pump has been kept on standby to ensure that there won’t be any interruption during the work.

As many as 60 odd workers including supervisors and labourers will ensure an uninterrupted work and equal number of additional workers will be kept on standby. According to sources,a major section of the bus deck will be completed in this 18-hour marathon work. The elevated bus deck would be spread over an area of 15000 sq ft. Of this, work on 9000 square ft space will be completed by Wednesday noon.

“Design permits joints in the concrete structure only at certain limited locations. Carrying out the same work in stages may result in several cold joints which are not desired in such structures. Working at a stretch is the only way to ensure a monolithic structure,” said Phapalkar.

Cold joints are intersection of one concrete pour and beginning of a new concrete pour in batches. Structurally cold joints are considered weak areas which may permit the entry of water into the structure.

The project also boasts of 12000 sq ft elevated concourse for booking of suburban train tickets.
