Fort Vibhag Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal has taken up the cause of organ donation this year. The mandal, which installs Icchapurti Ganesha (wish-fulfilling Ganesha),has been urging people to register.

“There are thousands in the city and the state who die waiting for a suitable organ,be it kidney, liver or lungs. Ganeshotsav was started with the intention of bringing masses together and spreading awareness on important social issues. After the death of former CM Vilasrao Deshmukh [due to delay in liver transplant,we decided to take up the issue of organ donation. There are many superstitions attached to the subject and there is a general lack of awareness among people. We want to change that,” said mandal director Raju Surve.

Setting an example,Surve and 10 other members of the mandal have registered with the zonal transplant coordination committee to donate organs post-death. They are now urging family and friends to come forward. “It is important to take the first step. Now that we have got our donor cards,we have set an example for others to follow,” said a mandal member.

During the ten-day Ganesh festival, the mandal will distribute pamphlets, put up posters and show documentaries on organ donation. A kiosk at the mandal will help those interested in donating organs with procedural details.

“Our target is to get at least 100 people to register. We’re sure Lord Ganesha will bless us to make this drive a success,” Surve said.
