After several complaints from municipal councillors about the sub-standard quality of items provided by the BMC to students in municipal schools, the civic body has passed a Rs 20-lakh proposal to conduct a third-party audit in the next two months.

“The audit will be carried out by the All India Institute of Local Self-Governments (AIILS), which will select random schools from 1,192 municipal schools across the 24 wards in the city. With the proposal being passed, we will soon direct the institution to begin the work,” said civic education officer Shambhavi Jogi. The institution is expected to carry out the audit with the help of a questionnaire, which will aid them in assessing contractors. The BMC provides 27 free items to municipal students, which includes uniforms, shoes, socks, notebooks and raincoats.
