The Stage is Set

Last year, even as Thespo was facing a financial crisis, theatre lovers came together to help host the festival. This,in turn, gave birth to Friends of Thespo, and today,it’s this very community that is being thanked by the organisers of Thespo 13: Theatre Tera Mera.

Packed with interesting workshops, live band gigs, platform performances and plays,Thespo 13 promises to be a treat of sorts for theatre lovers. The festival, being held from December 13-16 at Prithvi Theatre and on December 17-18 at the NCPA Experimental Theatre, will have four plays. While Cock (English) and Ek Don Adhich (Marathi) are from Mumbai,Patient (Marathi) and Janhit Mein Jaari (Marathi) are from Pune.

Kashin Shetty,a member of the screening panel this year and a participant and winner at Thespo since 2003,points out,“The festival line-up this year made me see youth theatre in a new light as all the plays deal with difficult questions that we are faced with on a daily basis. Young theatrewallahs are taking the challenges of growing up head on and this is reflected in the kind of stories they have chosen.”

The festival will also have a series of unique workshops that will be conducted by the local and international theatre fraternity. Workshops will be conducted by Alyque Padamsee,actor-director Faezeh Jalali and RJ Rohini Ramanathan. If this is not enough, actor David Hirst will be in attendance, thanks to Thespo’s continuing partnership with Urban Myth Theatre of Youth (Adelaide,Australia).

Other festival highlights include live acoustic bands such as Blek, along with new entries Tejas Menon,Vernon Noronha and Spud in the Box. The platform performances include workshop productions Us and Them and Kalakaar Ki Kahani from Kolkata and an expressionist contemporary dance piece A.T.T.A.C.H.E.D.

The festival will culminate with the Thespo 13 Awards Nite on December 18 at the NCPA Experimental Theatre.
