In 79 AD,the sister cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum were destroyed and buried during a long catastrophic eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius. The ruins steeped in history are captured in stark detail by Italian photographer Mimono Jodice.

His photograph will be part of the photo exhibition Unescoitala which will be on display at the Nehru Centre from March 11 to 17. The exhibition will showcase the works of 14 of Italy’s best contemporary photographers were commissioned to photograph 44 world heritage sites in Italy,including the medieval hill town Assissi,the cultural landscape of Cinque Terre and the renaissance city of Urbino.

The photo exhibition forms a component of the eighth edition of Festa Italiana,the Italian festival organised by The Indo-Italian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IICCI). Unescoitala is not the only photo exhibition in the festival. Another,titled Showcase Italy,will show 20 prime locations in Italy,highlighting their cultural heritage and scenic beauty. “This being the peak season,we want to lure as many tourists as possible,” says Salvatore Lanniello,business head,ENIT—the Italian State Tourism Board,which has organised the exhibition at Inorbit Mall,Vashi,on March 13 and 14.

While in its seventh edition,the festival offered road shows and food festivals including cheese and pasta making demonstrations,this year,it’s introducing a Vetrina Italian Shopping Festival for the first time.

“It’s a platform to present to the Indian consumers the best of Italian brands present in India,” says Narinder Nayar,president,IICCI. The festival will provide a shopping map featuring 120 participating Italian brand outlets,including Fiat,United Colors of Benetton,Kappa and Little Italy.

An Italian film festival has been organised from March 13 to 16 at the Nehru Centre featuring the works of directors like Vittorio De Sica,Giuseppe Patroni Griffi and Pietro Germi. The films will include Miracolo a Milano,a neorealist classic directed by De Sica that tells the tale of the miserable Milanese underclass,Divorzio all’Italiana,which takes a satirical look at Italian society,and Morte a Venezia,a romantic drama set in Venice.
