A constable with Thane rural police allegedly tried to commit suicide by immolating himself at his Thane residence Friday. Vartak Nagar police said Bharat Thorat (51),who suffered 90 per cent burns,was admitted to Thane Civil Hospital. Thorat had been depressed and had not reported to work since his right leg was amputated six months ago after a road accident,police said.
Thorat was posted with Bhoiwada police station in Bhiwandi and stayed with his family at Police Lines in Thane. Around 3.30 am on Friday,he allegedly went to the kitchen,poured kerosene over himself and struck a match. His wife and children doused the flames and took him to hospital,police said.
Thorat told us he was involved in a road accident eight months ago and his right leg was later amputated, said senior police inspector N S Bangale. His family has told police that Thorat was depressed and had attempted suicide thrice in the past six months. A probe is on, said Bangale.
