A DAY after Mumbai Police announced suspensions of personnel from Nehru Nagar police station for allegedly accepting bribes to allow renovation of a dilapidated structure in their jurisdiction, residents of Thakkar Bappa Colony Thursday claimed that policemen had been approaching them for bribes since 2006.

A local social worker,Kasim Khan, shot footage of police personnel demanding money from his friend Prakash Navel for allowing him renovate a dilapidated structure in the 66-year old refugee camp. The footage lead to the suspension of 36 policemen from Nehru Nagar police station.

“They always target people in refugee camps, knowing very well that many of the renovations made to these structures are not legal, and capitalise on the fear of residents. They know that this roof over their heads are pretty much all that they have, and will do anything to retain it,” Vilasrao Madiye,a resident said.

“The almost-daily rounds of the police had become a way of life for us. After a point,we became convinced that there was no way out and began to accept it,” a resident said.

The structures in the refugee camp were provided as accommodation for people who migrated from Pakistan in 1947. However, they were getting demolished around a year ago. In February this year,Kasim Khan went to court and obtained a stay on the demolition of old refugee camps and the court ruled that new structures could not be demolished without notice.

“Even civic officials are hand in glove with policemen. They too have taken bribes from us,” alleged another resident.

Khan alleged that civic officials had taken bribes and he had complained to the Anti-Corruption Bureau in this regard.

Meanwhile, the Nehru Nagar police station wore a subdued look Thursday after 37 policemen collected their suspension orders. The disgraced cops were disturbed by the fact that they would have to break the news of their suspension to families on the occasion of Gudi Padwa.

“Two constables who were suspended were sitting right here in the police station for a long time. They said they did not want to go home and tell their families that they had been suspended. We had to reason with them and tell them that this was not the answer to the problem,” an officer said.
