A sessions court on Tuesday sentenced stamp paper scam kingpin Abdul Karim Telgi to seven-year rigorous imprisonment in one of the cases filed against him. Telgi and another accused Uday Sawant had pleaded guilty in the case. Sawant was sentenced to five years imprisonment. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 20 lakh on Telgi.
The case was registered in Mira Road in August 1999,after a man called Phoolchand Jain was arrested at the railway station for allegedly possessing fake stamps. His interrogation led to several more arrests including that of Telgi. A total of eight accused were arrested in the case. The trial against others is still pending.
Telgi has pleaded guilty in several cases including the one under Mahrashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) registered at Pune.
