Great Britains Emily Webley-Smith was stunned by hard-hitting Ching-Wen Hsu of Chinese Taipei in the quarterfinals of the US$ 15,000 CCI-ITF Womens tennis tournament at the Cricket Club of India courts on Wednesday.
Hsu,who troubled her much-fancied opponent with a barrage of forehand and double-handed drives, won the match 7-6 (4),3-6,6-1. The marathon tie, which went on for close to two hours, was full of fast-paced rallies, with neither player ready to give the other an inch.
Emily served hard and connected the ball well but Ching was equal to the task as she not only chased with terrific speed, but also returned with equal power.
The first set was quite a nerve-wracking affair as it went to a tie-breaker. Both were unrelenting before Ching clinched the tie-breaker 7-4 and pocketed the first set.
However, the second set was totally dominated by the Britisher as she raced to 5-2 before winning it 6-3 . While it looked as if Emily would runaway with the tie in the thirtd set,Hsu had different plans. Hsu staged a remarkable comeback in the third set. She took advantage of her tiring opponent. Errors creeped in to Emilys game and Hsu wrapped up the set,and the match, with ease.
