In a boost to the much-delayed Santacruz Chembur Link Road (SCLR) project, the state government issued a notification for acquiring a plot near old Agra bridge,LBS Marg,Kurla for the project.
According to the MMRDA officials, the 629 sq mt land belongs to one Baliram Shankar Thorat and the Thorat family was not ready to part with it. The MMRDA had even offered them rehabilitation at Mankhurd and Bandra Kurla Complex, but they refused. The agency should take a month to acquire the land.
We had no option, but to come up with a notification as it was obstructing the right of way (ROW) for the project, said Dilip Kawathkar, joint project director (public relations),Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP). The family will be paid the compensation, but it could be way less than what was negotiated with the family earlier. The SCLR is one of the complicated projects that has got six extensions from the World Bank. The MMRDA has not been able to get ROW at Netaji Nagar. Despite several negotiations and offers to 60 tenants of two buildings, the deadlock remains. The MMRDA had made an offer of giving Rs 12,000 monthly as rent with 450 sq ft of accommodation at the Bandra Kurla Complex, but the tenants want the size to be increased to 485 sq ft.
It has got success in convincing the mosque authorities at Tilak Nagar to shift. The mosque was blocking the ROW and the authorities were not ready to vacate the land. They have finally agreed to shift, said an MMRDA official.
