In a bid to make commuting easy for devotees, the Western Railway (WR) has decided to operate special train services on September 3,the last day of Ganesh immersion.
Like every year,we will be operating additional train services for devotees during night time. We are working on the timings of these trains, said Shyam Sunder Gupta, chief spokesperson,Western Railway (WR).
The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) will also be running additional services on the last day of the festival. We would run additional services on the prominent routes, said BEST chairman Dilip Patel.
Last week, the Mumbai police had sent a letter to the railways both WR and CR and BEST asking them to operate additional services during the night so that the devotees would be able to go home after the immersion. According to the police, the move will ensure that citizens, who miss the last train, will not stay back on roads and open places in the city during the night.
This will help us maintain the law and order situation in the city, said Joint Commissioner of Police (law and order) Himanshu Roy. The biggest challenge is crowd management. Such efforts will reduce the pressure on security forces as they can focus on other important issues.
When contacted, chief spokesperson for Central Railway (CR),Shriniwas Mudegrikar, said,It is practically not possible to operate such services as we have to undertake maintenance work during the night.
