The first India International Jewellery Week kicks off in Mumbai today
When models stride down the ramp at the Grant Hyatt today, the focus is not going to be on the garments- but on the jewels that they wear. The hotel is playing host to the first ever India International Jewellry Week (IIJW) from August 15 to 19.
The five-day jewel extravaganza will showcase dazzling collections of 30 jewellery designers and design houses like Gitanjali,Amrapali and Ganjam. It is an act of solidarity and designers across India will be participating, says designer Bina Goenka. The IIJW will reveal the latest trends and styles in jewellery. Designer Varuna D Jani says,Statement pieces are more fashionable. People want to buy something they can wear for casuals as well as formals.
The designers participating in the event also reveal that IIJW is more than just an international platform for Indian designers. Today designer clothes fetch more money and are sold according to labels, because the designers have managed to market their creative input in the fabric and stitch. Jewellery designers abroad have this prerogative but it is absent in India. Jewellery is still seen as an investment and not luxury, says Jani. Designer Farah Ali Khan adds,The modern consumer wants exclusivity, and we designers provide that. So it is important to recognize our contribution and not to bring it down to the cost of gold or silver.
