From August 1, the Mumbai traffic police will close the Sion overbridge as the Central Railway is planning to demolish the bridge that connects the Sion East and West areas. It will remain closed for the next two years.

The 112-year-old structure has been deemed unsafe by Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. It was initially scheduled for demolition in January but faced delays due to objections raised by former MP Rahul Shewale over traffic concerns and interruptions for road users. Later it was delayed to avoid inconveniencing school board exam candidates. In June, height gauges were installed to restrict heavy vehicles.

As the bridge closes, the Mumbai traffic police will implement traffic diversions. Vehicles travelling from Dr BA Road to the westbound Sion overbridge will be redirected towards LBS Road or Sant Rohidas Road. Similarly, traffic from Kurla Division heading eastbound on LBS Road or Sant Rohidas Road will be diverted away from the Sion overbridge. These changes will be in effect from 12 am on August 1 to July 31, 2026.
