(express photo) Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Monday gave approval to set up a Special Investigation Team ( SIT) to probe the alleged financial irregularities in projects undertaken by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
A special audit by the Comptroller and Auditor General — made public in Budget session of state legislative assembly in March-April — had pointed to irregularities to the tune of Rs 12,024 crore in various projects carried out by the BMC between November 2019 and October 2021.

The SIT will be headed by the Mumbai police commissioner and will include the joint commissioner of police responsible for the Economic Offences Wing, along with other senior officials.
Mumbai BJP chief Ashish Shelar had written to the CM demanding an SIT probe into allegations of corruption in the BMC.
