Three Sena workers booked for using dummy EVM near polling booth in Mumbai

The police said a non-cognizable offence was registered after which the three were allowed to go.

The Mumbai Police on Monday detained three Shiv Sena (UBT) workers for allegedly using a dummy of the electronic voting machine near a polling centre in Kanjurmarg. The police said a non-cognizable offence was registered after which the three were allowed to go.

A senior police officer said, “The Shiv Sena workers had made a duplicate EVM in which a symbol would also appear on the VVPAT machine. As they were using it around the polling centre, they were influencing the voters by asking them to press the third button.”

An official from the Election Commission then lodged a complaint after which a non-cognizable offence was registered against them.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sunil Raut, however, denied the allegation. He said, “We have not flouted any rule as our table was nearly 300 metres away. We were just using card boards to guide our voters.”
