AS THE  deadline nears to update Aadhaar card details on the government student portal, schools in Maharashtra are struggling to complete the task amid technical snags.

More than two crore students are enrolled in schools across Maharashtra, as per the government portal. Of the total 2,13,72,201, 2,09,81,280 students have their Aadhaar card registered.

However, even among the students who have registered the document, over 60 lakh are awaiting verification. These have been either declared invalid by the UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) or they have not been sent for validation as the Aadhaar data does not match with data on the student portal, as per officials.

Schools now have to re-enter the details to complete the verification process before the April-end deadline.

Meanwhile, 39,0921 students have not yet registered on the portal with the mandatory document.

While school administrations complain about the humongous task put on their shoulders, officials say they are facing glitches.

“For the last eight days, many schools have been facing technical issues. For example, with regards to mismatched data, where the school has to re-enter correct details, even after fresh details are entered, the old entry continues to stay. This results in incomplete status for the task. Repeated attempts are resulting in failure,” said Mahendra Ganpule, spokesperson for Maharashtra School Principals’ Association.

There are a total of 24,47,493 students whose Aadhaar card data does not match the student portal data with mistakes such as incorrect names, and age, among others.

Adding that officers from the Department of Education are constantly reminding schools to complete the task, Ganpule said, “Even as there is no written order in this regard, the Aadhaar verification of students will eventually finalise the actual number of students studying in schools across the state. Based on the figure, the positions of teachers will be approved in government schools. If this happens,  a reduced number of students may result in teachers being declared as surplus.”

If the issue persists, schools will require a deadline extension, he stressed.
