Senior Shiv Sena leader and former MP Madhukar Raghunath Sarpotdar,who had been convicted in a 1992-93 communal riot case,died after a cardiac arrest on Saturday. He was 79. He was admitted to Hinduja Hospital three days ago. His funeral is scheduled for Sunday.
Sarpotdar was a trusted lieutenant of Sena chief Bal Thackeray and was instrumental in floating trade unions in various sectors,including airlines,hotels and public sector units since 1985.
Sarpotdar was arrested during the 1992-93 communal riots in Mumbai for carrying an illegal firearm. Police action was taken on December 27,1992 against him for leading a mob and instigating communal fury in Bandra. In July 2008,a Mumbai court convicted him for promoting enmity and sentenced him to one years imprisonment.
Sarpotdar hailed from Anjanari village of Ratnagiri district and was born on January 31,1931. He was elected to the Assembly in 1990 and 1995 and to the Lok Sabha in 1996 and 1998.
Senior Sena leader Divakar Raote said Sarpotdar was a good parliamentarian and an aggressive union leader. Deputy CM and former Sena leader Chhagan Bhujbal said, I have lost a senior colleague and a good friend…He was a good organiser and an excellent trade union leader,who was loved by workers for his down-to-earth approach.
