Liverpool legend Ian Rush is rumoured to have asked for a shipment of baked beans to be sent to Turin, during his year-long stint with Juventus in 1987,thus portraying his distaste for anything that is not Liverpool. He denies this, however, and blames the slow pace of the football played at the Italian-based club, for his immediate return to Anfield. One thing is for sure though that this Welshman was a true Liverpudlian at heart. On an otherwise perfect career graph, the years stint at Juventus was merely a blot, either side of which included eight successful years at the Merseyside club that yielded him a total of 229 goals, five league victories, one European victory and three FA Cup titles.
When in Italy, you need to learn Italian, tell everyone that you love the place and that you are the best player in the world. Its quite different from the culture in England. The pace was too slow. I had
opportunities to go to clubs like Bayern Munich and Inter as well, but Kenny (Dalglish) rang me and convinced me to go back. Im glad he did, Rush said on his trip to Mumbai to support the ‘Go Forward’ football clinic.
It would have been none other than the current Liverpool manager that could have convinced him to rejoin a deadly combination that had harrowed many a Premier League defense. Dalglish and Rush formed a lethal pairing, considered one of the best in world football. According to Rush,Dalglish was a magician on the pitch. We had a telepathic understanding on the pitch. Without so much as a glance he would split the defense with his pass and make it easier for me to score. He always seemed to know where I was going to run. His reputation has made the Liverpool faithful demand a miracle every time he is on the Anfield pitch, he said. And this was the reason, according to him, that he was appointed manager in January of 2011. Ex boss – Roy Hodgson’s poor run of form in the start of the last season gave the Scot a steep mountain to climb when he was handed the reins. After starting poorly with two straight losses,he reinvigorated the club with his passion and dogged determination and turned the fortunes of Liverpool football club.
He shares a great understanding with the players. He is very private with the issues of the club. He will always take the concerned player into confidence and discuss the problem with him privately instead of blurting it out in the press. He has done a great job with the team so far. This season, however, the draw with Swansea was disappointing. We should have won that game and we need to win all the home games if we are to challenge for the title. Manchester United are good at doing that. Manchester City too look good to win the title, he said.
Although Rushs days as a striker are behind him,he still remains associated with Liverpool Football Club in an ambassadorial role, with his latest assignment of promoting the clubs interests in India. This is second visit to the country and is enamoured by the warmth of a billion people. The heavy population of the cities is the first thing that got my attention. But each person is very hospitable. It makes me happy to see the smiles on the faces of the boys and girls that I coach, he said.
His association with Dalglish remains and he claims to have enhanced his friendship with the man,off the pitch. We never really used to speak too much with each other when we were in the same team. We werent great friends back then. I have spoken more with him now than I ever did before, he said. And the Liverpool fans will be hoping that their partnership will garner yet another elusive premier league title in the near future.
