Trailing at the half-way mark,Rohan Rewale of Dahisar initiated a spectacular late burst to snatch the boys under-18 200m gold from formidable arch-rival Gaurang Ambre of Thane with a new meet record,in the 36th Bombay YMCA State Level Annual Athletic Meet, sponsored by Seven Hills Hospitals,at the University Stadium,on Tuesday.
Ambre,of Seven Stars Sports Academy,Thane, who snatched the 100m gold from second-placed Rewale the previous day with an effort that equalled the meet record of 11.2 seconds, was the biggest threat in the race and true to his reputation surged to the lead.
But Rewale,of VPM Sports Club,Dahisar chose to believe in himself and accelerated to pip Ambre at the tape and avenge defeat with a brilliant time of 23.1 seconds that eclipsed the 16-year-old mark of 23.9 set by Srinivas Gadewar of Dominic Savio Sports Club in 1995 and equalled last year by Anthony Coutinho of Dayanit Athletes.
Ambre won the silver in 23.3 seconds, while Swapnil Mankar of Poinsur Gymkhana won the bronze in 23.4 seconds, both efforts that bettered the meet record and ended the race in a thrilling finish.
Elena Alphonso of St. Agnes High School,Byculla,Anushi Desai of Jamnabai Narsee and eight-year-old dynamo Nilesh Thakur of Sports Authority of India,Kandivali were the other stars who spiced up the day with new meet records.
Alphonso smashed Kainaz Mistrys girls under-14 shot-put mark of 8.10 metres that stood for 10 years, with a brilliant throw of 8.77 metres, while Disha Vakharia of Rustomjee International School,Dahisar bettered the meet record with 8.25 metres to bag the silver.
India under-16 No. 2 and Maharashtra No. 1 Anushi Desai improved upon her own under-16 discus record with an impressive throw of 32.15 metres that eclipsed the 30.23 set last year. Anushis effort comes just before she joins the India camp for the forthcoming Youth Asian Games.
Tiny tot Nilesh Thakur was the cynosure of all eyes on the victory podium after he smashed the boys under-10 long jump record with a spectacular leap of 4.10 metres that shattered last years mark of 3.88 metres set by Aniruddha Nair of Rustomjee International.
