Actor Vikram Singh on wearing shades of grey in Heropanti and being relaunched with it.

The hero takes it all. Always. It’s the unspoken rule of cinema. “But you still need a villain to bring out the hero,” says actor Vikram Singh. After all, he is the antagonist in Sabbir Khan’s Heropanti — Tiger Shroff’s launch pad — which is “the relaunch pad” for Singh.

Singh, who has already played anti-hero roles in Telugu films, essays the role of Rajjo Fauji in Heropanti. “He is an arrogant Delhi-based Haryanvi jat, who is also a national boxing champ, and picks a fight with Shroff’s character for the same girl,” says Singh. A trained boxer, his fists will match Shroff’s martial kicks in the film.

“It’s high-octane action, and I had to bulk up for the role,” says Singh, who sported a lean look in his previous film, Ya Rab. Besides a high-protein diet coupled with weight training, Singh got in touch with his Haryanvi Delhi pals and picked the nuances of the Haryanvi Jat lingo. To label Rajjo Fauji as a villain would be grave injustice, says Singh.

“He is a grey character, an antagonist, and not at all like the typical colourful dramatic dialogue mouthing villains of yesteryears, like Prem Chopra or Ranjeet. Today the villain is more like Arjun Rampal of Om Shanti Om, or Vivek Oberoi from Krrish.”

Working in his father’s transport and food grains business, Singh got into movies through a family friend at the age of 22. He shifted base to Mumbai, and signed several blink-and-miss films (Mumbai Godfather, Souten the other woman, Old is Gold, Trump Card and Aatma) in Bollywood as the leading man, but success eluded him for a long time. “Unlike Tiger, I never had any godfathers or mentor or star father to guide me,” he says.

Now, at 32, Singh has high expectations from Heropanti, and considers it to be his relaunch pad. “The film’s already created quite a buzz, and people are waiting for Tiger Shroff. It’s a big banner and falls in the top league, I feel now is my turn to shine and get noticed,” he says.
