Amid talks of leadership change in Maharashtra Congress, former Chief Minister Ashok Chavan on Tuesday held a meeting with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge in Delhi. Sources said the discussion was about the possibility of ‘reforms’ within the state unit of the party ahead of the 2024 general elections.

“Last week, he (Chavan) sought time from Kharge to discuss issues pertaining to Maharashtra and steps to be taken to improve the party’s performance in the upcoming 2024 general elections. Chavan will be in Delhi and is likely to return on Wednesday,” said a leader close to Chavan.

Two weeks ago, The Indian Express reported that three senior Congress leaders from Maharashtra’s Vidarbha region visited Delhi to meet the party leadership to lobby for the replacement of present state chief Nana Patole. Sources close to Chavan said the discussion revolved around the steps to be taken to improve party’s performance in Lok Sabha polls in Maharashtra. “It is also important to decide on the reforms to be taken for the same,” said the leader.

Apart from leaders in Vidarbha, leaders across different regions have voiced their concerns over Patole’s functioning and have recorded their opinion with the leadership. Patole recently went to Delhi to visit party leader Rahul Gandhi amid speculations of attempts to replace him.

Patole’s tiff with Congress legislative party leader Balasaheb Thorat led the latter to offer his resignation from the post. Former youth Congress chief Satyajeet Tambe too had targeted Patole over his decision to opt to contest the MLC poll as an independent.

Recently, Patole crossed paths with former minister Vijay Vadettiwar from Chandrapur district, where he changed the party’s district president without consulting Vadettiwar. In the past, even after Congress’ victories in the council polls, local leadership have expressed their unhappiness over Patole’s functioning.
