Rape suspect moves bail plea, says being framed

A 29-year-old man,who had been arrested for allegedly raping and murdering a minor girl, approached a sessions court on Monday seeking bail and alleged that he had been falsely implicated in the case.

Mohammad Ajmeri Shaikh,a rickshaw driver, was arrested on March 9 for allegedly raping and murdering a nine-year-old girl. Her body was recovered the next day from the terrace of a building in the police quarters.

Ajmeri in his bail plea alleged that the police had falsely implicated him in the case due to the hue and cry created by local people. “On March 5,a group of people had assaulted Ajmeri accusing him of committing a theft in the area and had taken him to the police station where he was detained for a day. On March 6,Ajmeri was undergoing the treatment for his injuries at a local hospital. So the question of him murdering and raping the minor girl does not arise at all,” said his lawyer Prakash Wagh.

Deputy Commissioner of Police,Zone VI,Dilip Sawant said the police still consider Ajmeri as the prime suspect in the case and denied the possibilities of releasing him.

“There is strong circumstantial evidence against him and unless our investigations conclude, the question of releasing him doesn’t arise,” he said.

Ajmeri in his application contends that the DNA samples taken from the victim has not matched those taken from him.The court will hear the bail plea on May 20.

On February 9,the body of another girl,a five-year-old daughter of a shoemaker, was found inside a gunny bag on the staircase leading to the terrace of a building in East Kurla.

Forensic tests in both rape cases had confirmed that the semen belonged to the same person, but also confirmed that they didn’t match samples taken from Ajmeri.

Ajmeri’s sister had alleged that the police had arrested him as they were “under pressure to make an arrest” and that they didn’t have any evidence to nab him.

Following Ajmeri’s arrest on March 9,the police had said investigators had found suspicious injuries on his body and had also recovered a child’s watch from him.

Ajmeri had reportedly been unable to justify how he had procured the watch and whom did it belong to.
