Railways to build new platform at Borivali station

At last,the Western Railway has found a solution to the problems at Borivali station that have led to a series of protests.

While the Railway had spent lakhs of rupees in construction of platforms 7 and 8,which were far from the other platforms,the administration has now decided to build an additional platform,to be called 6 (A) at a cost of Rs 14.5 crore,and a single-storey building at Borivali East at a cost of Rs 9 crore.

The work is expected to be completed in nine months. Apart from this,the Western Railway has also sanctioned the work on a landing for a road overbridge on the southern end of platform no-8 for the convenience of commuters. A Rs 30-lakh contract has been awarded for the work,which is expected to be completed by March 2010.

According to sources,the tenders for the construction of the platform and building were floated on July 22.

The problems at the station had led to a series of protests,including a rail roko on February 4. Even now,as many as 52 local trains arrive on platform no 8.

Platforms 7 and 8 are so far from the other platforms,especially platform no 1,that it is not possible to reach them in time if any change of platform is announced for a train. If a train halts at platform no 8,the commuters have to face many hardships owing to the lack of connectivity. It is better for him/her to get down at Kandivali, said Sunit Dubey,a daily commuter.

The existing platform no 6 will be shifted towards the western side. The platform no 6(A) will be in the same alignment and there will another platform in front of the new building, said SS Gupta,Chief Public RelationsOfficer WR.
