Pre-monsoon showers finally hit the city and western suburbs on Wednesday giving Mumbaikars temporary relief. Officials of the India Meteorological Department confirmed that the pre-monsoon season has set in. While only light drizzles occurred in different stations in Mumbai on Wednesday, thundercloud activities over the city have increased considerably since Tuesday, said K Sathidevi, director of the IMD,Mumbai. In fact, cloudiness and pre-monsoon activities have improved all over Mahatrashtra, with thundercloud development being noticed over Mumbai, she said.
Several parts of South Mahatashtra (like Satara,Sangli, Sholapur and Kolhapur) as well as Marathwada (Jalna,Beed,Nanded and Parbhani) received rains on Wednesday. Pune and Goa also have been experiencing light showers, Sathidevi said. According to the IMD officials, the south-west monsoon has already advanced over the Andaman sea and the Bay of Bengal. We are expecting it to advance over the southern parts of Arabian Sea and some more parts of south and east-central Bay of Bengal over the next 48 hours. This makes the condition more favourable for monsoon onset over Mahatashtra soon.
On Wednesday,Mumbai remained partly cloudy with a maximum temperature hovering around 34°C and relative humidity at 84 per cent. Similar weather conditions will prevail over the next 48 hours,IMD officials said.
