Plan to increase security cover

Concerned over the security of the city’s transportation system,Mumbai police and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority are planning to beef up security at the upcoming Metro stations on the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor.

Concerned over the security of the city’s transportation system,Mumbai police and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority are planning to beef up security at the upcoming Metro stations on the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor.

At a recent meeting between city police chief D Sivanandhan,metropolitan commissioner Ratnakar Gaikwad and the concessionaire for the project,Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd director K P Maheshwari,the authorities decided to carry out a third party security audit to assess the security concerns.

Gaikwad said,“At the meeting we decided that the government would carry out a third party security audit for the arrangements. MMOPL would be in charge of all the security arrangements including putting up CCTVs,deploying security personnel,etc.”

The concessionaire of the 11.4 km metro corridor has already appointed Sectran,a French agency that handles the security of Paris Metro.

“The top most priority for us is the safety of commuters. The comfort and punctuality follows. The review will be as per the international safety standards which will be higher than what we have for the suburban railway trains,” said additional metropolitan commissioner SVR Srinivas.

Also,as a part of security measures,hotlines would be provided at stations to disaster management cell in Mantralaya and also in the office of Additional Chief Secretary,Home Department.  

According to Ashwini Bhide,joint metropolitan commissioner,the hand-held and frame scanners would be provided at the stations to monitor the baggage.

Apart from the Metro rail,the Home department is also reviewing the security plans for monorail which is likely to be operational by December. “The police department has also asked a detailed presentation on the monorail security which would be made in some days,” Bhide added.
