Panic gripped passengers of a Churchgate-bound local train when a refrigerator compressor fell on a commuter with a loud noise and started leaking on Wednesday afternoon. The passenger suffered minor injuries,said police.
According to police,78-year-old Vinay Kant Champak Lal Joshi,a resident of Borivali (east),was sitting in a window seat. All of a sudden,a compressor being ferried by a commuter fell on his left knee. He got down at Matunga railway station and received first aid .
The incident occurred around 1.35 pm at Matunga station and the train was halted till 2 pm for inquiry. When asked,passengers couldnt recall who was carrying the compressor. The compressor that weighs around 1 kilogram was ruptured by the fall. If it had exploded,many commuters could have been injured. Police have lodged a complaint against an unknown person under section 285/337 of the Indian Penal Code and 154/156 of the Indian Railways Act, said Bharat Kumar Rane,senior police inspector,GRP.
In 2008,several such incidents happened in this suburban section of the CR. But no such incident has been reported till now after the general manager,CR,announced a reward of Rs 1000 to persons who provide information on commuters ferrying compressors,gas cylinders or any other inflammable items in trains.
In March 2008,an AC compressor had exploded in an Ambernath-bound local train near Sion railway station. On April 13,2008,the Government Railway Police (GRP) had detained three persons from platform no.1 of the Dadar railway station for carrying a gas compressor and an LPG gas cylinder. They were travelling from Andheri station to Thane. Later they were arrested by police.
In the last week of December 2007,an AC compressor had exploded in a train at Cotton Green Station of Harbour Line,CR,causing minor injuries to two commuters.
