Over 600 ‘illegal’ taxis impounded

After a drive against errant taxis, the Regional Transport Offices have impounded 627 black & yellow taxis for being ‘unfit’ to ply on the city streets.

After a drive against errant taxis, the Regional Transport Offices (RTO) have impounded 627 black & yellow taxis for being ‘unfit’ to ply on the city streets. Moreover, around 60 per cent of these taxis are not “genuine”,the RTO officials have found.

According to Transport Commissioner Dilip Jadhav, the drive, undertaken after several complaints, was aimed at checking cabs from plying without proper documents and in unfit condition. The drive ended on Friday.

“We had formed 18 (flying) squads for the drive. Of the 5,427 cabs the officers randomly inspected,1,058 taxi drivers were issued challans for driving without proper documents. We have also impounded 627 taxis. Of these, around 60 per cent were not found to be genuine; the chassis of their original cars cut and welded onto other cars chassis; the engines that were changed or fitted were not according to the norms, etc. The registrations of these taxis will be cancelled according to the Motor Vehicle Act,” Jadhav said.

RTO officials said this is a serious problem and they expect many more such cases to come to light during similar drives. “Such drives will continue. We are now planning to start a drive to check on errant autorickshaws next,” Jadhav said.
