Opening Night

First time you realised that you wanted to make a movie:
After we finished shooting for Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna,in which I was assisting Karan Johar. That’s when I knew this is what I really want to do. I realised that I better start working on my film soon.

First time you met Ranbir Kapoor:
It was at the Dharma Production office during the making of KANK. Ranbir had come to meet Karan along with his designer Shabina Khan. I think he was shooting for Saawariya at that time. I was sitting with a colleague on the steps of the building, having a smoke and he came up to us and introduced himself and asked what we do and all that. That’s still the first image that comes to my mind when I think of him and I can’t forget how sweet he was on that day.

First time you met Konkana Sen Sharma:
That was in Goa. We were both at the Goa film festival and were introduced to each other by a common friend. We hung out with the whole group after that and it was very nice and chilled out.

First time you decided to cast the two in your film:
I always imagined my first film to be with newcomers since I was one and no one would probably agree to work in it. But after Karan backed me,so many avenues opened and both of them were my dream cast.

First day of the shoot:
Seemed unreal. There were some 80 people on the set and it took a while to realise that they are all there expecting me to tell them what to do. It was this huge pressure to suddenly feel in charge of such a big setting. There was something extremely wrong about me being in charge of so many people. It took a while to get used to.

First shot:
It was a scene with Ranbir and Konkana in his room. At the end of that day,I felt like I’d just had sex. Directing was always a dream and the work gave me such a big high.

First time you watched the movie:

Last Saturday,I sat and watched it continuously for the first time. I don’t want to sound pompous, but I loved it. I did see a lot of flaws and scenes that could be improved, but that will always happen.
