Whatever the age group, everybody has a favourite UNO moment. From trains to kitchen tables and recreation rooms, the four-colour card game has attracted many enthusiasts. Little wonder then that Mattel India is gearing up to celebrate the popular card game’s 40th anniversary with a special anniversary edition.

“What’s unique about UNO is that it lives wherever people play — at home,on a favourite game console,or on a mobile device,” says Rahul Bhowmick, head marketing,Mattel India.

The origin of UNO dates back to 1971,when a barber named Merle Robbins in Ohio,USA,created the game. Originally from Hungary,Robbins conceived the game in order to resolve an argument with his son about the rules of Crazy Eights,a similar card game where the objective is to shed all the cards from one’s hand.

The original decks were designed and made on the family dining table. Robbins and his family saved $ 8,000 to make the first 5,000 UNO packs. A decade later,in 1981,he sold the rights of UNO to International Games for $ 50,000,plus royalties of 10 cents per pack.

Today,UNO is produced by toy manufacturer Mattel in 80 countries, and has sold more than 150 million packs worldwide.

On the occasion of its 40th anniversary,UNO has designed a pack with a special card that includes a unique number that entitles buyers to guaranteed gifts.
