In a bid to avert long queues at RTO offices, the state government has decided to home-deliver driving licences.
At an additional cost of Rs 50,the transport department will deliver licences through the speed post within three to five days in cities like Mumbai and Pune.
At present, applicants have to make repeated visits to RTO offices to procure permanent driving licences. Recognising that in cities like Mumbai and Pune, the applicants do not have the time to visit RTO offices repeatedly, the state government has taken this decision.
According to sources,a total of 10 lakh driving licences were issued during 2006-07 and the number increases at the rate of 15 per cent a year.
The cabinet has also approved a fund of Rs 2.46 cr to strengthen the testing process and issue learners licence within two hours after an applicant appears for the preliminary test.
