The Mumbai Police on Thursday said the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls had passed off peacefully, with only a couple of incidents reported across the city.
There were only a couple of cases registered through the day. There were no major incidents anywhere. Around 20,000 police personnel,1,000 officers and 1,000 state paramilitary forces were deployed on election duties, said Mumbai Police spokesperson and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Detection) Nisar Tamboli.
We received a lot of calls on the helpline numbers provided for complaints. Most of these were about people not finding their names on the voters list. These callers were then given the numbers of the BMC helplines, said Tamboli.
According to the police,a case of rioting was registered by the Ghatkopar police around 6 am on Thursday after estate agent Rahul Ashwin Khilani (27) was assaulted by two men.
The incident took place around 4:30 am near Jolly Gymkhana in Kirolgaon,Ghatkopar. Khilani and some other supporters of Congress candidate Pravin Chheda were roaming around in a Toyota Innova, allegedly to keep a check on whether money was being distributed during polling. They were assaulted with belts by Kama Rajput and Jeki Dayal Bhanushastri, who are believed to be BJP activists. The duo has been arrested, said Tamboli.
In another incident, suspended Congressman Ajit Sawant, who was campaigning against the official Congress nominee in Mahim, claimed he was attacked by former legislator Sada Sarvankars men.
I was standing outside my office when four men attacked me. They were carrying choppers. A supporter standing with me fought with them and has sustained injuries on his face, said Sawant, adding that he had sustained bruises.
Sawant has been backing Congress corporator-turned-Independent rebel candidate Meena Desai in Ward 182 in Mahim. Sawant said he would register a formal complaint after undergoing a medical check-up.
The Agripada police also received a non-cognisable complaint (NC) after voter Deepak Motiram Kanade was assaulted by three alleged Akhil Bharatiya Sena (ABS) activists when he came out of a polling booth in the area.
We are yet to verify whether Kanade is an activist of a political party. He was allegedly beaten up by three men identified only as Bunty,Dharamvir and Nepali, who are residents of Cross Gully in Byculla and are believed to be ABS supporters, said Tamboli.
Meanwhile, the state excise department on Thursday said that it had arrested three menNityanand Kadakar (34),Rajesh Gowda (27) and Rakesh Gowda (22) from the Fort area for selling liquor while prohibition was in force.
