The spate of suicides continued in the city on Friday with three more cases reported a school student in Vile Parle,a Merchant Navy employee in Jogeshwari and a vendor in Dockyard Road. There have been over 30 cases since the year began.
The body of 27-year-old Samit Lad was found by his father on Friday evening. Lad was with the Merchant Navy and was on leave to prepare for his MBA exam,which would have given him a chance to work and settle in the UK. Samit was feeling low of late,according to preliminary statements of his father Srikant Lad and his uncle, said police sub-inspector S Kargutkar of the Jogeshwari police station.
Lad was home when his father,who is retired,went out on Friday evening. He returned to find the body hanging from the ceiling fan. Samits mother had not returned from work in a private firm. No suicide note was found. We will record statements of the parents to ascertain whether anything specific had spurred the suicide. We will also verify whether he was under any medication for his depression, said the officer.
In another incident,the body of 15-year-old Siddharth Patil,a Class X student of Parle Tilak School,was found hanging in his residence at Samart Wadi,Vile Parle. His father works at an imitation jewellery workshop and mother is a housewife. Both had left for their native village leaving Patil and his 11-year-old sister with a relative,Netaji Nerume. After dinner,the trio slept and the next morning,around 5.45,Nerume woke up and saw Patils body hanging from an iron hook in an adjacent room, said an officer from Vile Parle police station.
In the third case,the body of 54-year-old Gajanan Murkute,who used to supply utensils to caterers,was found hanging in his Sankalp Niketan residence on Dockyard Road. The Byculla police said he was a bachelor and an alcoholic.
