THE NARSEE Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) has decided to allow students another chance of special examination, after several of them alleged that they failed because of the institute’s new method of evaluation. Calling it a one-time, exceptional opportunity for students across all UG courses, the institute has informed students to apply for the same.

In a statement issued by the institute on examinations, Vice Chancellor of the NMIMS, Dr. Ramesh Bhat, said, “Over the last two months, we have been interacting with students and parents about their academic performance in the first term of 2022-23. We have been exploring various options available to us so that the students’ careers are not affected, and, at the same time, the sanctity of the examination system is not compromised.”

It continued, “After considerable deliberations, we have resolved to give a one-time opportunity to the students who could not perform well earlier to appear at a special examination. To ensure that students take advantage of this opportunity, we plan to offer remedial coaching, especially in courses where students have not done well. This exceptional opportunity will be available for students across all UG programs on the basis of applications by students.”

Several students pursuing various courses at the NMIMS’s Anil Surendra Modi School of Commerce had complained that they have to repeat an entire academic year after failure due to a changed evaluation system. Along with their parents, these students had met with authorities at the NMIMS.

One of the parents said, “The NMIMS which has multiple campuses has a single question paper but the evaluation was done at the respective campus. It was fair because in lack of standardisation, the syllabus competition was at different levels at each of the campuses. Teachers would be aware of it and evaluation was done accordingly. But this time all papers were jumbled up and were assessed randomly at different campuses leading to failure of many.”
