The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will deploy a new monorail prototype to its fleet by monsoon. The new rake was recently brought to Mumbai and is presently undergoing trials.

Currently, the 17km monorail route—from Chembur-Wadala to Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk in Mumbai Central—has eight rakes including one on standby. It currently operates 118 trips at an 18-minute interval. There have however been complaints about the services being delayed due to frequent breakdowns.

In order to address the issue, the MMRDA decided to expand its fleet by adding 10 more rakes. These rakes were purchased from Medha Servo Rail each priced at Rs 58.9 crore. While the first rake was delivered recently, additional deliveries are anticipated within this year, said sources.

With the integration of the new rakes, service frequency is projected to improve to a five-minute interval, nearly doubling the daily service count to 250, according to MMRDA estimates.

The new rakes boast enhanced passenger capacity, accommodating over 600 passengers per train compared to the existing capacity of 500.

Presently, the weekday ridership stands at 16,000, with the weekend figures crossing 10,000. Daily ridership is expected to surge with plans for multi-modal integration and the introduction of new rakes.
