Ahead of the third meeting of opposition’s Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) in Mumbai, more than a dozen socialist organisations and NGOs in the state have joined hands to extend political support to INDIA.

This is for the first time that non-political entities from the “socialist janata parivar” have come together with a political stand.

A joint meeting of the parivar was held in Pune last week where veterans from the state’s socialist movement as well as political leaders, representatives from youth and student organisations unanimously voiced the need to defeat “fascist” and “communal” forces in the Centre and extended support to the INDIA.

“Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar took an initiative to bring together all opposition parties in the country under one banner. If parties with political differences can come together in a larger interest of the country, why can’t we join hands? We are scattered in different organisations but believe in socialist ideals… it is possible to take a political stand without compromising our autonomy,” said Kapil Patil, member of legislative council in Maharashtra and JD(U) leader.

Patil added that despite no political representation within the legislative assembly, the socialist janata parivar commands over seven per cent votes in the state. “The united front of this parivar will be a big boost to the opposition in Maharashtra,” he said.

Veteran socialist leader, labour leader and social reformer Baba Adhav said that it was important to stand with INDIA. “We all stood against the emergency and went to jail. But what is happening today is far more serious. It is time to counter the attack of communal forces of aggressive Hindutva by being an Indian. Socialism is accepted by our Constitution and we should not be defensive about it,” said Adhav, adding that this is not only a political fight but the one to save the Constitution.

Kumar Saptarshi, founder of Yuvak Kranti Dal (YUKRAND), said it was time to defeat a party that has blown out of proportion by inducting corrupt leaders. “It is time to decide whom to neglect. Decide that we do not want Modi and Shah. Rest will be followed later,” he said.

The meeting addressed by over a dozen socialist leaders from different social spheres also advised the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) to take along Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi, farmers’ fronts as well as working classes “without whom transfer of power is difficult”.
