Members of Rashtrawadi Vidhyarthi Congress (students wing of Nationalist Congress Party) on Monday barged into the premises of Padmabhushan Vasantdada Patil College of Engineering at Sion-Chunabhatti to protest alleged irregularities by the college management.

Members of Rashtrawadi Vidhyarthi Congress (students wing of Nationalist Congress Party) on Monday barged into the premises of Padmabhushan Vasantdada Patil College of Engineering at Sion-Chunabhatti to protest alleged irregularities by the college management.

The college has been embroiled in various controversies, such as alleged discrimination and malpractices in staff appointments, running classes from two additional floors for which permission has not been obtained and flouting of AICTE and Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) norms. The college management had allegedly submitted false documents to Shikshan Shulka Samiti to increase students’ fees. The matter came to light after a students’ organisation filed a complaint with DTE.

RVC president Amol Matele said,“Over 120 students are made to sit in classrooms with a capacity of 60. The facilities they provide are not at par with the fee they charge. The Mumbai University and AICTE must take action against the college. We demand the resignation of the principal Dr KTV Reddy.” Reddy was not available for comment.

“We had received several complaints against the college and a committee was formed. We are awaiting its report,” said Dr Naresh Chandra,Pro Vice-Chancellor of MU.

MU had set up a three-member fact-finding committee under Dr Vijay Joshi, principal of Somaiya College,in January this year.

On February 9,a four-member committee appointed by AICTE visited the college and inspected various documents and the college campus. In the same month, the Tahsildar of Kurla issued a notice to the college asking it to pay a premium of Rs 18 crore towards two unauthorised floors built by them.

In 2011 the CAG had passed strictures against PVPP,which was allotted a plot measuring 12,886 sq metres at Sion-Chunabhatti in 1985 for construction up to fourth floor. The institute constructed two more floors in 2007 without prior approval of the government. The BMC raised an objection and issued a notice to the Pratishthan on July 19,2007.The government approved the unauthorised construction in August 2009. The institute was asked to pay a premium of Rs 18 crore.
