‘Named in Khichdi scam’: Sanjay Nirupam fumes as Sena UBT announces Amol Kiritikar as candidate
Has demanded that Kiritikar's candidature be withdrawn

Mumbai Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam on Sunday slammed Sena UBT after its chief Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday announced Amol Kiritikar as the party’s candidate for Lok Sabha polls. He has demanded that Thackeray withdraw the Kirtikar’s candidature as he was named in the Covid-19 khichdi scam.
Nirupam is also vying to contest the Mumbai North-East Lok Sabha seat which has become a bone of contention between Congress and Sena UBT. Expressing his disappointment for prematurely announcing the candidate for Mumbai’s North-West Lok Sabha constituency before finalising seat-sharing arrangements within MVA constituents, Nirupam demanded that his candidature be withdrawn.
Uddhav, on Sunday, also visited the shakhas in Mumbai North West LS constituencies to campaign for Amol Kiritikar.
“The seat-sharing formula is yet to be finalised and an official announcement is pending. At this point announcing a candidate for a seat is fair? Isn’t it the violation of alliance dharam by Sena? Or was this done deliberately to humiliate Congress? The top leadership of Congress should intervene,” Nirupam wrote on social media platform X.
Further, Nirupam accused Kiritikar of being part of the ‘khichdi scam’ and accepting bribes during the Covid-era programme initiated by BMC to provide free food to migrant laborers. He also questioned how they would campaign for a candidate involved in a scam.
“Who is the candidate Sena has announced? He was involved in Khichdi scam and is accused of taking a bribe from the khichdi supplier. ED is still investigating the entire matter. Will Congress and Sena workers campaign for a scam candidate? This is my question to the leadership of both parties,” he said further adding that “I urged Sena to withdraw his name.”
Notably, Amol’s father and sitting MP from the seat Gajanan Kirtikar is affiliated to the rival Sena headed by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
Thackeray announced Amol’s candidature while addressing party workers in the constituency, though talks among MVA partners—Sena (UBT), NCP (SP) and Congress—are still underway.
