Muslim outfits support purdah at workplaces

Supporting the view of the Deoband seminary in UP,Muslim organisations here have asked women to not work and mix with men at workplaces without purdah.

The All-India Milli Council (AIMC),Raza Academy and All-India Sunni Jamaitul Ulema (AISJU) said women should dress as per the Shariah (Muslim law). “Purdah is an integral part of Islam. Women should dress modestly and cover themselves if they have to work. It is unlawful if they work and talk to men who are strangers without wearing a veil,” said Moonisa Bushra Abedi,a professor and AIMC member.

However, they were not against Muslim women working in offices. “Their earnings are not ‘haram’ but if they do not follow principles while working, then it is,” said Mohammed Saeed Noori, general secretary,AISJU. Abedi said purdah was a necessity for Muslim women at workplaces. “We all know how a woman is harassed at workplaces. If they cover themselves,at least such incidents will come down,” said the Physics lecturer.

The AIMC also slammed Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray for his comment regarding the veil ban in France. “Who is he to comment on the religious aspects of Islam. We have never commented on or expressed opposition to practices like Devdasi and Sati in Hindu culture,” Abedi said.

‘Javed Akhtar,Shabana Azmi not Muslim’
Following remarks by scriptwriter Javed Akhtar against Deoband Muftis and their followers, the AIMC said Akhtar should apologise or face action. “Both he and his wife do not follow Muslim law or consider themselves Muslims, why should they talk on Islam,” said Abdul Qayyum Shaikh of the AIMC. They also said Muslims working in the Film Industry are ‘haram’ as it was against the Shariah.
