Traditional song and dance routines have always been a regular part of Hindi feature films. With songs being used as background score,it is now closer to how the West uses music in a movie. A composers lab, organised by the Mumbai Academy of Moving Images (MAMI) for the 15th Mumbai Film Festival, will focus on this changing trend. The two-day workshop will see six emerging composers interact with professionals from the UK and India.
Films such as Ship of Theseus have shown a new way of approaching music. There is a lack of knowledge about the style in which this music should be used. With the lab,we hope to help emerging composers gain some understanding about this, says Andrew T Mackay,British composer and founder of Bohemia Junction Limited that is organising the workshop in conjunction with Abbey Road Studios and PRS for
Music,UK.
With the audio wing of Yash Raj Studios as the venue, the lab will be held over two days,October 21 and 22. The six young and emerging composers selected from an online entry through the Mumbai Film Festival website that ended on October 7 will be given separate rooms where they will be asked to compose a score for a short video clip. About 40 people applied for the lab, with links to either short films that they have scored for,or if they havent had previous film work, then Soundcloud links to the music they have composed.
Participants will be provided with a computer, required instruments and even live musicians for recording at the venue. Although it isnt a competition, the best work will be sent for mastering to the London quarters of the iconic Abbey Road Studios, where legends such as The Beatles and Pink Floyd have recorded. It will then be screened at a Masterclass session at Metro Cinema, where a panel discussion of the labs creative advisors will be held.
The labs chief creative advisor is British composer Ilan Eshkeri, who has scored for movies such as Stardust, and Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll for which he received a BAFTA nomination. As the special guest,he will also be a mentor throughout the workshop. Among Indian composers,Amit Trivedi and Ranjit Barot will interact with the participants. We dont want the composers to let go of the Indian ethos. Be it is folk or semi-classical,its about a more cinematic way of composing music, says Mackay. The lab is looking at applications for two entries from Mumbai and the rest from across India.
