Mumbai on Tuesday was left grappling with high temperatures and humidity, sparking concerns about the incoming spate of ‘October heat’. With no sign of respite, Mumbai is likely to reel under similar conditions in the days ahead with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting little to no spells of rainfall over the next few days.

The sudden spike of temperatures triggered concerns over the incoming ‘October heat’ among netizens on Tuesday. A common weather phenomenon for Mumbai, the ‘October Heat’ leads to escalation in temperatures from the first week of October each year with the daily temperature rising and ranging between 30 and 35 degrees Celsius.

Data furnished by the weather department showed that on Tuesday, the IMD’s Santacruz station recorded a maximum temperature of 33.5 degrees Celsius – marking a departure of 1.2 degrees Celsius above normal. Meanwhile, the relative humidity had also spiked marginally, hovering around 90 per cent at 8.30 am.

Speaking to The Indian Express, a weather scientist of the IMD Mumbai said, “Currently, the temperatures are high owing to the clear skies which result in insulation and direct sun rays that heat up the land faster. Overall, the temperatures in the city may continue to remain in the range of 32 – 34 degrees Celsius over the next few days, with the possibility of light drizzle for now.”

Furthermore, according to the IMD bulletin, the temperatures are likely to increase further early next week. Meteorologists have pointed to the possibility of an anticyclonic circulation alongside an easterly component resulting in wind patterns conducive to a spike in temperature.

Meanwhile, with the city gearing up for the withdrawal of monsoon, weather experts have said there is a possibility of thunderstorms in Mumbai next week. While the typical date of monsoon withdrawal in Mumbai is October 8, the line of withdrawal is currently crossing over Rajasthan and Gujarat.
